In April 2025, ArenaPetro, Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "ArenaPetro") successfully completed the off casing fiber optic positioning operation of a shale oil horizontal well in Northeast China, based on the WIIS (Well Integrity Inspection System) and tractor. We obtained complete fiber optic positioning data for the entire 2000 meters horizontal section.
Horizontal wells have high requirements for the passability, centralization, and stability of logging tools due to their large well deviation angles, complex wellbore trajectories, and long measurement sections. In this operation, the horizontal measurement section exceeded 2000 meters. The WIIS system needed to work continuously in a high temperature and high pressure environment, and also faced many challenges such as a large amount of oil sludge in the casing, coupling grooves, and irregular changes in the azimuth of the casing in the horizontal section. ArenaPetro overcame these numerous difficulties and successfully completed the logging service of this well.
This is the first logging service for off casing fiber optic positioning logging service for a horizontal well by ArenaPetro after conducting multiple vertical well jobs in many oilfields in North China, East China, and Northwest China in 2024/2025. It obtained complete logging data at one time. The successful operation of this well proves that ArenaPetro's Well Integrity Inspection System not only has advanced technology but also high applicability and stability. Besides conventional vertical wells, it is applicable to various application scenarios and complex well conditions such as highly deviated wells and horizontal wells, and can maximally meet the needs of oil field customers for off casing fiber optic positioning detection of different types of wells.
The off casing fiber optic positioning measurement technology is based on ArenaPetro's latest Well Integrity Inspection System (WIIS for short). It can identify various specifications of optical cables with outer shell materials such as 6.35mm ~ 11x22mm steel armored or plastic encapsulated ones. Compared with several existing domestic schemes based on electromagnetic measurement or beacon point measurement methods, the advantages of using the WIIS Well Integrity Inspection System for construction are as follows:
1. Time saving: It can identify the fiber optic trajectory of the entire well section. With a continuous measurement method, the fiber optic azimuth resolution can reach 10 ~ 20 points per meter. For a 2000 meters perforation section, only 10 hours of measurement time is required. Plus tool preparation and interpretation work, customers can generally obtain the interpretation report within 48 hours and plan the perforation scheme.
2. Cost saving: No additional processes are required for optical cable laying, and the optical cable does not need to add any magnetic materials (such as beacons). One trip construction can complete multiple logging projects such as optical cable azimuth trajectory, casing damage imaging, casing thickness, cementing quality, and azimuth perforation evaluation.
3. It is equipped with a built in gyroscope, which can give the accurate azimuth of the optical fiber or perforation holes.
4. It can withstand a temperature of 175 °C, and tools with a temperature resistance of 200 °C or higher can be customized.
5. It supports service in horizontal wells and highly deviated wells.
6. It is completely unaffected by the casing or the geomagnetic field, and there is no need to worry about the depletion of the beacon battery.
With the increasing emphasis on and popularization of down hole optical fiber monitoring technology in China, off casing fiber optic positioning has become a key link in ensuring the safety of optical fibers and an essential technology for evaluating the quality of azimuth perforation.
