In early June 2025, ArenaPetro, Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "ArenaPetro") used the third-generation ultrasonic hole imaging tool (hereinafter referred to as "UHI3") to successfully complete a wellbore integrity logging operation for a shale gas horizontal well in Southwest China, obtaining complete ultrasonic imaging logging data for the entire well section of more than 5,600 meters.
The UHI3 ultrasonic imaging logging technology is based on ArenaPetro's latest R&D of the second generation Well Integrity Inspection System (WIIS 2). It has been comprehensively upgraded from UHI2, retaining original functions such as measuring casing thickness, inner diameter, first interface cementing quality, fiber orientation outside the casing, and perforation quality evaluation. Additionally, it adds the following logging services:
-
Evaluation of low density cementing quality: The UHI3 ultrasonic hole imaging tool is equipped with three inclined transducers. By setting specific angles and frequencies, it can excite special acoustic waves in the casing. The cementing quality of low density cement is evaluated by calculating the amplitude attenuation rate of two receiving transducers.
-
Measurement of cement sheath thickness: The thickness of the cement sheath is calculated based on the time difference between the echo time of the acoustic wave reflected by the outer casing or formation from the inclined incident transducers and the arrival time of the first wave.
-
Evaluation of casing centralization and borehole shape: The centralization of the casing or the shape of the borehole can be evaluated according to the thickness of the cement sheath.
Horizontal wells have extremely high requirements for the passability, centralization, and stability of logging tools due to their large well deviation angles, complex borehole trajectories, and long measurement sections. The horizontal measurement section of this operation exceeded 1,500 meters. The UHI3 needed to work continuously for more than 10 hours in a high-temperature and high-pressure environment, facing challenges such as a large amount of oil sludge in the casing, collar grooves, and irregular changes in the casing orientation of the horizontal section. ArenaPetro overcame these difficulties and successfully completed the construction of the well.
This logging operation was the first UHI3 logging service provided by ArenaPetro, and complete logging data were obtained at one time. The successful operation of this well proves that UHI3 of ArenaPetro not only has technological advancement but also high applicability and stability. In addition to conventional vertical wells, it is suitable for various application scenarios and complex well conditions such as highly deviated wells and horizontal wells, maximizing the satisfaction of oilfield customers' needs for wellbore integrity evaluation under different well conditions.
Due to the data volume of the UHI3 logging tool being far larger than that of the UHI2 logging tool, ArenaPetro has specially equipped it with a high speed cable telemetry system MCM1500, which can reach a transmission rate of 1.6 Mbps on a 7,000-meter cable and 1.2 Mbps on a 13,500 meter cable. This fully ensures the data bandwidth requirements of the UHI3 logging tool and meets the long cable transmission requirements of ultra long and ultra deep wells.
ArenaPetro will continue to deepen the R&D of the UHI3 system to further improve detection accuracy and efficiency. We sincerely invite oilfield enterprises and technical service companys to negotiate cooperation and explore new potentials of oil and gas development together!
