By the end of November 2025, ArenaPetro, Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “ArenaPetro”) had successfully provided external casing fiber optic positioning logging services for more than ten wells across multiple oilfields operated by CNPC, Sinopec, Yanchang Petroleum and other enterprises.
By combining ultrasonic imaging tool and gyroscopic azimuth measurement technology, ArenaPetro delivers high-precision trajectory parameters to support customers in performing perforation operations and verifying fiber optic integrity. This technical approach has been proven to be the most cost-effective and high-precision solution available. In multiple permanent external casing fiber optic wells serviced in recent years, all wells that adopted the azimuth data provided by ArenaPetro for fiber‑avoiding perforation achieved successful protection, while those that did not suffered fiber damage. This fully validates the advancement and reliability of ArenaPetro’s technology. Going forward, ArenaPetro will fully promote this integrated logging technology, helping customers accomplish cementing quality evaluation, fiber optic positioning and perforation planning in a single logging trip. The technology can also serve as evidence for third-party liability identification.
Project Achievements
l Completed fiber trajectory logging for two permanent external casing fiber optic wells with 7" casings at vertical depths exceeding 5,600 meters, and supported customers in fiber‑avoiding perforation; tasks that other logging tools were unable to perform.
l Completed multiple external casing fiber optic positioning assignments exceeding 3,000 meters in depth for an oilfield, identifying 360° twisting and serpentine distortion of fiber optics on single casing joints, enabling successful fiber‑avoiding perforation.
l Completed multiple external casing fiber optic positioning tasks at 2,500 meters for an oilfield where casings exhibited strong magnetic interference, causing large errors or no valid readings from electromagnetic tools. The system accurately interpreted fiber trajectories and supported successful fiber‑avoiding perforation.
l Completed external casing fiber positioning in a 2,500‑meter horizontal section for an oilfield. Results showed an 80% match with a foreign electromagnetic tool used for cross‑verification. At one horizontal section location, the azimuth difference between the two methods exceeded 60°. The customer did not adopt ArenaPetro’s azimuth data; after perforation and fracturing, the fiber broke at that depth. ArenaPetro concluded that the competing perforation azimuth was incorrect with insufficient safety margin, causing perforation holes to be too close to the fiber, whose protective sheath could not withstand fracturing stress, resulting in failure.
l Based on field operations across various oilfields, ArenaPetro’s WIIS system performs external casing fiber positioning in vertical, high-deviation and horizontal wells, covering 4" to 13" boreholes, with maximum operating temperature of 175℃ and maximum pressure of 140 MPa. It supports logging via wireline, tractor, and coiled tubing with cable, and is immune to casing magnetic interference.
l The WIIS system provides accurate and continuous fiber trajectory parameters with depth resolution of 0.01 m and angular resolution of 0.5°. Its precision is hundreds of times higher than electromagnetic or beacon methods that only provide azimuth at casing collars. It also detects continuous fiber twisting within individual casings, strongly supporting perforation design and smooth field execution.
l After perforation failure, the system provides precise perforation azimuth with angular error within 3°, enabling direct visualization of relative positions between perforation holes and fiber, and clear determination of liability. The company’s first field service was delivered in a “forensic” capacity, providing an inspection report for fiber breakage caused by failed perforation.
Verification Results
l Post-perforation inspection confirmed intact fiber optics, verifying the accuracy of trajectory data provided by ArenaPetro.
l Sustained R&D in casing fiber positioning technology since 2019, with extensive field experience accumulated.
l Ultrasonic imaging combined with cementing quality logging has become the optimal technical model for fiber positioning.
Service Scope
l Recently completed fiber positioning services for more than ten wells, including vertical, high-deviation and horizontal wells.
l Customers cover major onshore oilfield regions across Northeast, East, North, Northwest and Southwest China, fully addressing external casing fiber positioning under various complex geological conditions.
l Simultaneously delivers cementing quality logs. A single trip enables measurement of casing wall thickness, eccentricity, cement sheath quality, two bonding interface conditions, and continuous fiber azimuth trajectory, greatly reducing on-site operation time and cost, and earning strong customer approval.
Technical Effectiveness Comparison
l Customers invest heavily in fiber deployment and prioritize positioning accuracy. Most wells use two or more tools for cross‑verification, with some employing four different physical logging methods for comparison.
l All wells adopting ArenaPetro’s fiber azimuth data and perforation plans achieved 100% fiber integrity, verified by DTS optical transceiver data.
l In cases where ArenaPetro’s data was rejected and significant discrepancies existed, pre-perforation optical transceiver readings were normal, but post-perforation signals were lost in the perforated interval, with 100% fiber severance or damage. As well fluid invaded the cable, the entire optical line became permanently unusable.
l Data from over ten wells strongly proves that ArenaPetro’s positioning method is scientific, effective, and holds significant technical and economic advantages.
In 2026, ArenaPetro will fully promote the integrated WIIS Well Integrity Inspection System + Distributed Fiber Optic Positioning logging technology across national oilfields, enabling cementing quality inspection, fiber positioning and perforation guidance in one trip. After perforation and fracturing, ArenaPetro provides perforation quality evaluation including quantified data on hole depth, azimuth, area and penetration depth, improving overall operational efficiency and predicting oil and gas production. It also acts as a third-party identifier to determine liability after failed fiber‑avoiding perforation, clarifying whether issues stem from perforation operations or prior positioning errors. This capability will significantly enhance the added value of technical services, supporting marketing and brand building.
