In June 2026, ArenaPetro, Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as ArenaPetro) deployed its self-developed UHI2 ultrasonic imaging logging tool to complete wellbore integrity logging for an 18-inch large-casing compressed air energy storage (CAES) well in a southern Chinese province, delivering satisfactory logging interpretation results to the client. High-quality ultrasonic imaging logging data of the 18-inch diameter casing was successfully acquired in this operation. The team overcame the technical bottleneck that conventional ultrasonic imaging tools fail to obtain acoustic impedance data (including casing wall thickness, cement sheath first interface, etc.) when casing wall thickness exceeds 19 mm. This achievement marks a major technological breakthrough for ArenaPetro in logging operations for ultra-large and ultra-thick wellbores.

With the continuous promotion of new types of power wells (compressed air energy storage wells) and gas storage wells across China, the construction of power wells fitted with 20-inch and larger casings has been growing rapidly. Nevertheless, ultra-large-diameter casing wells bring multiple technical obstacles to ultrasonic imaging logging: poor centralization control of logging tools, insufficient ultrasonic transmitting energy, and complicated rotary power supply for large probe bases. In addition, formations in some blocks feature high salinity, requiring ultra-thick casings with wall thickness over 16 mm, which exceed the acoustic impedance measurement range of standard ultrasonic imaging logging tools.

To tackle the above challenges, ArenaPetro carried out adaptive modification and customized production of key components for its existing UHI2 ultrasonic imaging tool. A full series of rigorous laboratory simulation tests and field well tests were performed to guarantee smooth construction of this project — the casing wall thickness of the target well reached 19 mm — and qualified ultrasonic imaging logging data was finally obtained.

ArenaPetro’s self-developed UHI2 ultrasonic hole imaging tools are mature products available in multiple outer diameter specifications: 56 mm, 60 mm, 73 mm and 92 mm. These tools have been applied to gas storage wells at major oilfields for many years, with a cumulative total of over 300 logging runs. They are primarily used for casing damage inspection and cement bond evaluation of gas storage wells. The successful logging operation on this 18-inch large-casing gas storage well fully validates the outstanding technical advantages and robust well condition adaptability of ArenaPetro’s UHI2 series tools. Drawing on years of logging service experience, ArenaPetro is capable of full-coverage logging services for all casing sizes: slim-hole casings (4.5 inches and below), conventional casings (4.5 inches to 13.625 inches), and extra-large casings (22 inches and above). The tools also fit various working scenarios and complex well conditions such as high-angle wells and horizontal wells, fully meeting all logging requirements of oilfield clients for all casing sizes and well environments.

Moving forward, ArenaPetro will keep focusing on the development of new products, technologies and functions, striving to deliver more comprehensive and professional service support for gas storage construction projects at oilfields and regions both at home and overseas.
